Moving all the time?

Are you moving every year? Every 6 months? Do you feel exhausted by it?

If so, I’m totally there with you.

My husband and I have moved every year since we got married, going on 5 years.

And I’m not going to lie, it’s been really freaking hard sometimes.

Picking up and moving just to make friends, get settled and find a routine, to then pick up and move away another year later can be incredibly draining.

So what can we do about it??

Here are the best tips from someone who constantly feels like she’s moving states and has no end in sight for it.

Try not to be a control freak about it

Coming from a self diagnosed control freak, this is a doozy.

Realizing that everything isn’t in your control can send you spiraling. Do yourself a favor and try meditating, going on walks, or finding ways to soothe your nervous system to help yourself to not freak out (totally NOT speaking from experience). Stressing yourself out with a perfectionist mindset in a situation where several things can and definitely have the potential to go wrong, try not to sweat it. Easier said than done for sure! If it helps, write out or discuss with your friend or partner things that can go wrong, and make a plan for each. Most likely everything will go fine. But in the case that they don’t, at least you’ve aired out your fears and have a plan to rectify them!

Make the moving process as seamless as possible

Pinterest has SO many different hacks to make the moving process a little more bearable. The most brilliant one I have come across (and will be trying out on our inevitable next move) is to color code your boxes by room. At the very least, writing which box goes where in sharpie can be super helpful! But color coding and having a key for said color code is an easy way to look at a box from afar and know exactly where it goes! This is especially helpful if you have friends/family or a moving company helping you move.

Embrace minimalism

The less things you have the less you have to pack! The one good thing I have found about moving is it’s always a great opportunity to dejunk my life. I’m always able to get rid of several garbage bags worth of clothes and items that we no longer use to charity. Why take them with you if you’re not going to use them!? Embrace owning less in this season of your life. It will make the moving process a bit more tolerable when you have less boxes to move!

Try to see the big picture

Ultimately, try to see this move as an amazing opportunity for you (or you and your family)! Most people move for job opportunities. Will this new endeavor help you grow in your career? Will you be making more than your last job? How many new opportunities will you be able to have with the experience you will gain? Moving is a short phase, and will be over quickly.

Embrace the new city you’re in and find joy in the little things!
